Jerry Jones wants credit for everything that happens in the Cowboys. But this year the tide has turned on the owner. He isn’t a big fan of giving large money to the coaches and staff. And we have seen it time and again. After Mike McCarthy parted ways with the franchise, they went on a search, settling down on Brian Schottenheimer at the end. The fans got angry, joined by many league veterans.
During the January 30 episode of the Dudes on Dudes podcast, former Patriots greats Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman discussed the resurgence of Commanders under Dan Quinn as their head coach. Taking a shot at the Cowboys, where Quinn served as the defensive coordinator for 3 seasons starting 2021, Gronk said, “If you look at it, why the Cowboys were 12 and five over the last couple years. I mean without him being with the Dallas Cowboys they absolutely tanked this year on the defensive side of the ball. Even Michael Parsons brought up that they missed Dan Quinn throughout this season as well.”
There’s some truth there. In 3 seasons with Dan Quinn as the DC, the Cowboys finished all 3 with a 12-5 win-loss record. Moreover, America’s team dominated the league by leading the turnovers. This year, their first without him, they slipped to a 7-10 result, failing to qualify for the postseason. Jerry Jones is the sole decision-maker at the franchise.
When Dan Quinn was going to the Commanders, Jones told him, “That’s such an important fan base. Dan, you’re the right man for that.” That’s right. But who will care about the feelings of the Cowboys fanbase? The most wealthy sports franchise and the first to cross a $10 billion valuation, the Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl for 3 decades since 1995.
This year too, there were reports of talks with coaches like Pete Carroll and Deion Sanders. But in the end, the owner carried on his shrewd ways.
Jerry Jones’ stubbornness forced Mike McCarthy to move on
From 2006 to 2018, Mike McCarthy served 13 seasons as a head coach of the Green Bay Packers. It was a fairly successful tenure with 1 Super Bowl and 9 playoffs. He sat out 2019 before joining the Cowboys in 2020.
In 5 seasons at Dallas, they qualified thrice for the playoffs. But never reached the NFC Championship game, let alone the Super Bowl. In the end, he left the team, with reports claiming he wants to sit out the 2025 season. But wait, new reports have come out, revealing why he left.
Apparently, Jerry Jones was open to a 3-year head coach contract extension. But the coach wanted 5 years. At last, they couldn’t agree on any mutual decision. The owner’s stubbornness led McCarthy to leave, and Dallas is now counting on its offensive coordinator promoted as head coach.
Maybe the Cowboys owner should also hire a new GM. And watch the game from the outside, reflecting upon the changes in the league. 3 decades without a trophy is a long time. And they don’t look like a team that will go all the way next year as well. It’s craziness!
