This article contains spoilers for the Emmerdale episode airing on Tuesday May 27 at 7.30PM. It’s available to watch on ITVX now.
Once again, this episode started inside the head of John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), as he had another nightmare about his wedding day.
This time the registrar had reached the classic line: ‘If anyone knows any lawful impediment to this marriage…’ when the ceremony was interrupted by Aidan Moore (Geoff Dignan) – still in his hospital gown and claiming that John was the reason he ended up in a coma.
In the waking world, we saw John driving off to the hospital along with Aidan’s mum, Cathleen (Julia Watson). Aaron (Danny Miller) saw them too, and for the rest of the episode he tried to get hold of his groom-to-be, who wasn’t answering his phone.
Since John Sugden arrived in the village viewers have gradually been made aware that he’s a troubled character – to say the least.
He has a compulsion to save people, even if it means that he’s the one who makes them ill or injured in the first place as we saw when he made Chas (Lucy Pargeter) overdose on her pain medication.

We also know that he killed Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter), accidentally while in the process of trying to save him after the barn fire. He then went on to dispose of his body in the lake – a lake which has been the focus of attention recently after it was contaminated by slurry (John’s fault again) and will need to be dredged.
No wonder John is having nightmares, but underlying all of his actions is the mystery of exactly what happened between him and Aidan Moore, his former fiancé, who was in the army with him.
Did John do his best to save Aidan’s life after a horrific injury, as John claims? Or was John the direct reason that Aidan has been in a coma for years?
As long as Aidan remained in that coma there was no risk of the secrets coming out, and John was happy to move on and look forward to his new life with Aaron. But as soon as he got the news that Aidan had regained consciousness, everything changed.
At the hospital John asked Cathleen to leave him and Aidan alone together. He then proceeded to berate Aidan for not valuing him enough. He said that Aaron loved him ‘More than you ever did. He knows how lucky he is to have me.’

Anyone who has witnessed John’s actions so far will have been seriously worried for Aidan at this point.
He had the power to potentially destroy John’s life by revealing whatever it is that John doesn’t want everyone to know, and we’ve seen John being capable of some very ruthless actions to protect himself when he feels cornered.
So when he produces a syringe and tells Aidan ominously, ‘This is about us, now, and where we go from here’ – what is he about to do?
Metro has chosen not to reveal what happens next, for those who are watching the episode at its scheduled time.
But with Aaron also headed for the hospital in time to hear some huge news, and Chas and Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) back in Emmerdale worrying that both grooms are missing right before the wedding, are John Sugden’s true colours about to be revealed?
