Just as we thought Carla Connor (Alison King) had escaped her cupboard jail forever, Coronation Street hit us with another sinister curveball.

After more than a week tied up in Becky Swain’s (Amy Cudden) flat, Carla was finally given the means to break free, after winding her captor up enough that she threw a plate at the wall.

Finding one of the shards, Carla used it to cut through her restraints, before emerging from the closet with enough force that she sent Becky flying into a coffee table.

Unfortunately, the damage wasn’t enough to keep Becky down for long, and in tonight’s episode she retaliated much harder.

As quickly as Carla had managed to get the front door open, Becky was behind her, grabbing her by the hair and slamming her head into the wood, before spinning her round and giving her a second shove into the wall.

It was enough to knock Carla out cold, but thankfully not enough to kill her.

Becky Swain is one of those fantastic camp villains that we love to hate, especially after her treatment of Carla Connor! Thankfully, actress Amy Cudden is much nicer than her cobbles counterpart, though she warned Metro at the Corriedale premiere that Becky is very dangerous. However, Becky hasn’t taken that possibility off the table, as Carla was horrified to find out when she woke up.

As Becky ensured that Carla wouldn’t be making another escape attempt, the factory boss begged for her freedom.

However, unhinged Becky was not only remorseless, but downright delusional as she pointed out that while the situation ‘wasn’t ideal’, she wasn’t deliberately trying to make Carla suffer.

Contradicting herself completely while complaining about the pain in her head from her fall, she refused to give Carla her anti-rejection medication.

Without the pills, Carla’s body could reject her donor kidney, which would have fatal results.

Desperate, Carla brought the conversation back to the reason she was being held prisoner in the first place: Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).

Poor Carla’s only crime was falling in love with the wrong woman. Carla and Lisa were living in a perfect little bubble – minus a few hiccups – until Becky rose from the dead to claim back her family.

With Carla out of the picture, Becky has managed to get her feet back under the Swains’ table, and back into Lisa’s bed, all the while torturing Carla with details of what they’ve been getting up to.

However, with hope of rescue fading fast, Carla warned Becky that Lisa would see who she really was eventually.

Still basking in her victory, Becky argued that with Carla gone, no one would be able to come between her and her family again.

Trying one last time to appeal to whatever shred of humanity Becky might have had left, Carla pointed out that she didn’t have it in her to kill her, or she would have done it by now.

In a terrifying twist, Becky pocketed Carla’s meds and agreed… Before pointing out that she didn’t need to kill her, because her body would do it all by itself.

Leaving Carla bound and gagged in the darkness once more, it was clear Becky planned to leave her there alone, knowing that she wouldn’t survive without her medication.

With Carla’s situation looking more helpless than ever – especially with Becky having been hospitalised after collapsing from her injuries and being unable to escape the watchful eye of Lisa and Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) – will anyone find her before it’s too late?
