Today's entertainment landscape is obsessed with looking backward, for a variety of reasons. Studios, streamers, and their various corporate overlords look at IP as a more secure investment in a business in which, as the saying goes, nobody knows anything. Why audiences show up for all these remakes and reboots is more complicated, but we tend to group all the reasons under the blanket of nostalgia. It can be comforting to revisit something familiar when living through turbulent times.
