Marisa Tomei is the latest Marvel star to support Mark Ruffalo after Paramount accused the actor of antisemitism. Tomei, who played Aunt May in the Spider-Man films, shared a statement from the 1A committee on her Instagram story. She added the message, “We stand with Mark.”

The 1A committee defended Ruffalo in its statement. It rejected the antisemitism accusation and said the controversy is taking attention away from concerns over the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. It referred to Ruffalo as an “artist who has chosen to use his influence to fight for democracy, human rights, free speech, and the future of the media industry.”

The dispute began when Ruffalo criticized the proposed $111 billion deal. Paramount accused him of using antisemitic tropes while discussing Oracle, the Israeli military, and the Ellison family. Ruffalo denied the accusation and said his comments were about political and corporate actions, not Jewish people.

Tomei’s support follows statements from other Hollywood figures, including Paul Walter Hauser and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder. The controversy has also led to a bigger debate about media control, free speech, and the proposed merger.

What did Mark Ruffalo say about Paramount’s antisemitism accusations?

Ruffalo responded to Paramount’s accusation in an X post. He called the accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” He said that criticizing the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives connected to it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people.

The actor also explained that his views come from his political convictions. He said, “Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.”

Ruffalo further defended his criticism of the Ellisons and Oracle. He raised concerns about data, surveillance technology, government contracts, editorial freedom, and potential job losses from the merger. The actor also argued that the proposed deal deserves greater scrutiny, noting that lawmakers from both parties have called for a national security review.
