Sreenath Bhasi's Karakkam is all set to make its digital debut. Sony LIV has announced that the film will begin streaming on July 3 as part of its month-long Malayalam Movie Fest, a special showcase featuring a slate of Malayalam film premieres throughout July.
A musical horror-comedy gets a second innings on OTT
Directed by Subhash Lalitha Subrahmanian, Karakkam stood out during its theatrical release for attempting something rarely seen in Malayalam cinema. Billed as the industry's first musical horror-comedy, the film combines supernatural thrills, comedy and music against the backdrop of a retro-inspired world.
Released in theatres on May 28, the story follows two youngsters whose harmless New Year's Eve prank takes an unexpected turn after they accidentally unleash a group of quirky spirits. Their misadventure soon snowballs into a string of supernatural encounters packed with humour, chaos and musical moments, making for a family entertainer with an unconventional premise.
The film stars Sreenath Bhasi alongside Femina George, Shaun Romy, Sidharth Bharathan, Jean Paul Lal, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Praveen TJ, Manikandan R Achari, Biju Kuttan, Midhutty, Shalu Rahim and Vineeth Thattil David. The screenplay has been written by Subhash along with Nipin Narayanan and Arjun Narayanan, based on a story by Dhanush Varghese. Bablu Aju has handled the cinematography, while Nidhin Raj Arol serves as editor and Sam CS has composed the music. The film is produced by Kimberly Trinidade and Ankush Singh under the banners Krown Stars Entertainment and Black Turtle Productions.
Director hopes the film reaches a wider audience
Speaking about the film's digital premiere, director Subhash Lalitha Subrahmanian expressed his excitement about introducing Karakkam to a larger audience through streaming.
"With Karakkam, we wanted to offer audiences something fresh by blending horror, comedy and music into a fun, family entertainer that also takes us through a retro world. The love the film received in theatres has been truly encouraging, and I'm excited that Sony LIV will bring the film to an even wider audience. I hope viewers enjoy its humour, music and heart as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life."
While Karakkam drew attention for its genre-blending approach during its theatrical run, its OTT release is expected to help the film find a broader audience. Family entertainers and offbeat horror comedies have often enjoyed a longer shelf life on streaming platforms, and Karakkam could benefit from viewers discovering it outside the pressures of the box office.
Meanwhile, Sreenath Bhasi has a busy lineup ahead. The actor will next be seen in Salam Bukhari's Udumbanchola Cable Vision, which stars Mathew Thomas in the lead, Shan M's survival thriller G1, and the Tamil film Vekkai alongside GV Prakash. With Karakkam now arriving on Sony LIV, audiences who missed it in theatres will soon have the chance to experience its quirky blend of comedy, music and supernatural fun from the comfort of their homes.
