Avengers: Endgame Encore proves Marvel has still not learned from its biggest MCU mistake.

Before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in December, Avengers: Endgame will be rereleased in theaters as Avengers: Endgame Encore on September 25. The Encore presentation will feature four additional minutes of new footage plus an additional sneak peek at Avengers: Doomsday.

The Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Doomsday, recently teased what fans can expect to see in the Encore presentation of the 2019 record-breaking film.

“It’s going to connect the story of the two movies,” Joe Russo said via Fandango. “There’s a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, which is also inclusive of all the other stories that have been playing out. I think it’s important to see Endgame in theaters for two reasons. One, if you want to have a lot of fun cheering and screaming and reliving all the emotions you had the first time you saw it. Number two, I think it’s required viewing for following the story in Doomsday.”

Anthony Russo added, “If you saw Endgame when it originally was released, you couldn’t see this coming.

The Russos have every right to hype up their projects to sell tickets. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. The problem is how Avengers: Endgame Encore is being framed as “required viewing” for those who want to see Avengers: Doomsday. It seems like Marvel failed to learn from one of its biggest mistakes: making MCU movies and shows feel like homework.

Marvel needs to stop making MCU homework again

Before Avengers: Endgame, fans only had to worry about seeing a few movies a year to connect the stories within the Infinity Saga. Marvel shows on Disney+ did not exist at the time. The movies felt special as a lead-up to Avengers: Endgame, which capped off an excellent saga that lasted over a decade.

Once Marvel started consistently making Disney+ shows in 2021, keeping up with the Multiverse Saga became a chore. Now, fans had to watch multiple movies and shows a year to stay informed about the MCU. Marvel oversaturated the market, and fans rejected it, as seen by several underwhelming box office totals and Disney+ viewership totals in 2022 and 2023. Marvel eventually course-corrected and took the “less is more” approach, so their movies and shows could feel like standalone events that general audiences could enjoy even if they’re unfamiliar with previous MCU projects.

If Avengers: Endgame Encore is required viewing for Avengers: Doomsday, it’s a massive blunder from MCU leadership. If Avengers: Endgame Encore was being completely recut, then I understand emphasizing its importance for Doomsday. However, Endgame Encore is four minutes longer than Endgame, and some of the color grading is being fixed. So now fans have to go out and see a three-plus-hour movie for a few extra minutes that connect to Doomsday? That is a ridiculous ask for general audiences.

Avengers: Endgame Encore should celebrate Marvel’s crowning achievement, not alienate fans who don’t see it. Marvel movies should be inclusive and not exclusive. Hopefully, Avengers: Endgame Encore isn’t a return to the disastrous “homework era.”
