One of the biggest sleeper hits of 2026 — both on streaming and in theaters — probably wouldn't have been made were it not for the breakout success of a movie that was released six years ago. This year's The Sheep Detectives combined the whimsy of a British small town mystery with the slickness of a '90s Hollywood movie, delivering wholesome entertainment for the entire family. It grossed more than $130 million worldwide against a reported budget of $75 million, despite essentially being a Prime Video release. At around the same time, Netflix released the second season of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, which came some months after the streamer's limited series Agatha Christie's Seven Dials. If Westerns are having a resurgence, so are murder mysteries.
