A decade after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao exchanged blows, boxing and its fans are now being treated to another once-in-a-lifetime showdown. On September 12, Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will step into the ring in what promises to be one of the most significant fights in recent memory. After months of uncertainty, Turki Alalshikh officially announced the bout in Riyadh two weeks ago. Although there are still four months to go, the sheer magnitude of the contest is already making waves across the boxing world.
Unsurprisingly, the fight has sparked a wide range of speculation. Some discussions have been thoughtful and analytical, while others have taken on a more emotional and unpredictable tone. The general consensus still leans in favor of Canelo, the super middleweight king. However, his recent performance against William Scull has sparked new debates. Despite securing the win, many felt it was far from convincing. Since the official face-off, a growing number of fans and observers have started to place their bets on Crawford. Fresh off his surprising win over Ryan Garcia, a Canelo confidant and former stablemate, Rolando Romero aligned himself with those who believe Crawford can ‘beat’ Canelo. His reasoning, however, may raise a few eyebrows.
Rolly Romero: Cheering Terence Crawford, dissing Canelo
During a conversation with Fight Hub TV’s Marcos Villegas, the topic naturally turned to the Canelo-Crawford showdown. Toward the end of the interview, Villegas asked the obvious question: “Does anything different happen in the Crawford fight?”

Rolly Romero’s response was clear as day. “I hope Crawford beats the sh*t out of him,” he said. The reply shocked the wits of Marcos Villegas. So Romero reiterated, “Now I’ll tell you like this… I mean the weight division stuff, you know, but I hope Crawford beats the sh*t out of him.”
Villegas probed further, something most viewers wanted to know. Why does Rolly Romero want Crawford to drub Canelo? When Romero once again continued with the ‘Crawford beat the sh*t out of him’ rant, Villegas checked why Canelo earned Romero’s displeasure on account of the Scull fight. So the Las Vegas native replied, “What Canelo did on that day was disrespectful to boxing; it was just simply disrespectful to boxing in every way, so there.”
No love lost for Canelo
Romero, the son of Cuban immigrants, appeared especially upset about how the bout with William Scull, a Cuban-born German fighter, unfolded. Criticizing Canelo’s tactical shortcomings, Romero remarked, “Canelo is the only Mexican in the world that don’t know how to cut off the ring.”

In contrast, Romero was effusive in his praise for Scull. Despite widespread criticism of the German for being overly defensive, Romero admired his ability to escape punishment and walk away with a payday. He said, “I’m so happy for Scull… but I mean, dude, can you imagine? You’re fighting Canelo Alvarez, man. Nobody ever heard of you; nobody knows your name. You get out of that fight, and they didn’t even land a single punch on you. You made all this money.”
That comment prompted Villegas to ask whether Romero believed Scull actually won the fight. Surprisingly, Romero answered that both fighters should have been disqualified. Though Canelo barely managed to touch him, he couldn’t give props to Scull for the fight.
With the fight between Canelo and Crawford drawing closer, fans can expect more such outspoken and unpredictable takes. The buildup is far from over.
