A popular PS5 system feature update that fans have been begging to keep is being taken away tomorrow, but it’s not all bad news. Yes, we’re talking about the classic UI themes and boot screen that were rolled out last month to mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Sony said at the time that the feature was temporary, following which numerous petitions popped up asking the company to reconsider.
PS5 30th anniversary feature update will return, but keep your expectations in check
Over on X, Sony said that it’s working behind the scenes to bring the special PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 themes back in the coming months. However, fans shouldn’t take that as confirmation that themes, in general, will make a return to PlayStation.
Arguably one of PS4’s best features, themes have been sorely missed in the PS5 generation. Fans have been demanding themes since the console’s launch in 2020, but it looks like Sony has no plans to bring them back beyond what we have in the new Welcome Hub as well as the 30th anniversary feature update.
“While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we’re excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all,” Sony tweeted. It’s unclear why the current feature needs to be pulled and then brought back, but we’re no tech experts at Sony.
