When you see Brexton Busch race, his skills make it easy to forget the trials his father, Kyle Busch, faced just to race. While Kurt was riding on race tracks, Kyle was out there, forging documents, hiding his car and success from his mother. “We saw her taillights go down the street, and I mean it was like a fire drill,” Tom Busch said. But with B-Rex getting his start with Kyle and Samantha’s support, it was only time before he had the rest of the family cheering for him.
And that’s what happened when, in a special INEX National Qualifier, Brexton Busch took to the track in his first-ever legend car race and it wasn’t just any debut. It was a head-to-head showdown against Keelan Harvick. The moment marked the first battle between the heirs of two NASCAR Giants. A generational clash that had the grassroots racing world buzzing.
Brexton started the race in the 16th position and held his ground against a field of seasoned competitors, noting a 16th-place finish in a green-to-checkered run. It wasn’t a win, but it definitely was a huge milestone to achieve. “ Couldn’t miss @brextonbusch’s 1st Legends Car race. This kid is on the fast track. 10 years old racing with the adults. Started 16th, Finished 16th. Race went green the whole way. To finish 1st, first you must finish,” the Hall of Fame inductee praised on a post. Brexton competing among adults at just 10 years of age is quite admirable.

While the scoreboard didn’t exactly scream victory, the race was definitely a significant one for Brexton. He kept it clean, short, consistent, and, more importantly, proved that he belonged in this sport. As the dust settled, the racing community, including Kurt, knew that this was only the beginning. The Busch legacy isn’t just being passed down; it’s already picking up speed. And B-Brex is quickly rising through the ranks.
Just two years ago, Brexton had his West Coast Bandolero debut in the Bash at the Bullring. It’s a track that has seen three generations of Busch family members racing with Brexton’s entry. Grandpa Tom won the first-ever race when the track opened. Brexton’s uncle, Kurt, followed it up with 30 wins at the track in 1990s. And B-Rex knew how important Bandolero was. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to race at the same track that my Dad, Grandpa Tom and Uncle Kurt have a lot of wins at. I haven’t raced my Bandolero much, but hopefully I can get the win!”
And it’s not just Brexton getting support from his family. Kurt admitted Brexton was his motivation to return to the track. He said, “I see my nephew turning up at the dirt tracks. I think his first Legends race is this Thursday. I’ll be there. He is going to be the one to get me back behind the wheel.” Just watching his nephew give Rowdy advice after his poor Bowman Gray outing had Kurt sending him a digital message with a cheeky, “You tell him Brex. Thx.” The respect they have for each other is clear.
Perhaps we’ll see Brexton at Pocono this weekend, as Kurt makes his return to the track.
Kurt Busch reminisces about his racing roots
For Kurt Busch to return to Pocono would be no easy feat. After all, it’s the very track that saw him retire after a horrible incident in practice. Ever since then, the driver had to call it quits from the sport. However, being added to NASCAR’s Hall of Fame Class of 2026 does make that return better, and for Kurt Busch, it’s an honor he didn’t see coming.
He admitted, “I felt like it was race mode. I had to put the emotional blinders on. For me, as just a blue-collar kid out of Vegas, I never would have imagined this. We were a family where it was just a hobby. It’s like a hobby to race, you know. It was just fun to go to the track as father and son. My dad had his car, and he helped me build mine, and you meet this guy or you meet this sponsor or you say thank you to this person, and the next thing you know — I mean, I’ll talk about this later on at the speech — but I’m running a Legend Car in 1999 at the (Las Vegas) Bullring in September of 1999. September of 2000, I’m in Jack Roush’s Cup car qualifying at Dover. Jeff Gordon’s next to me. Dale (Earnhardt) Senior’s behind me. I mean, that’s how fast things happened for me. I don’t know how. I don’t know why.”
And his brother, Kyle Busch, jumped at the chance to celebrate the racing legend. He said, “What an incredible achievement to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame! Your dedication, hard work, and passion for the sport have truly paid off, and being a Cup Series Champion and Daytona 500 Champion is no small feat. I couldn’t be prouder of you! You’ve not only made a name for yourself on the racetrack but also inspired so many with your journey. This honor is a testament to your talent and perseverance.”
