MobLand co-creator has revealed whether a major character dies in the Season 1 finale, following a tense final scene that left fans guessing. As the crime saga wraps its first chapter with major power shifts and emotional fallout, Butterworth clears up the ambiguity surrounding Tom Hardy’s character.

Jez Butterworth confirms Harry doesn’t die in MobLand’s ending
Tom Hardy’s character, Harry Da Souza, survives the dramatic final scene in MobLand Season 1, according to showrunner Jez Butterworth.
In the final episode, Harry returns home after helping the Harrigans defeat the Stevensons. During an argument, his wife Jan (Joanne Froggatt) accidentally stabs him in the chest with a kitchen knife.
“I mean, if you think about it, ‘is Harry dead?’ No. We’re not gonna – We love Harry. We love Tom,” Butterworth told the New York Post. The camera cuts away after the stabbing, but Harry is seen sitting and making a joke, leaving room for ambiguity.
Butterworth emphasized that Harry’s domestic struggles were the emotional arc of the season. “It felt satisfyingly dramatic that having walked through fire for 10 episodes, what happens at the end is the one thing he’s not expecting.” He noted that the “attritional cost” of Harry’s unpredictable lifestyle strained his marriage.
The finale confirms the deaths of Richie Stevenson (Geoff Bell) and most of his crew. Meanwhile, Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and Maeve (Helen Mirren) end up incarcerated. Maeve reveals she orchestrated the war to determine a successor. Kevin (Paddy Considine) steps up as leader, while Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) connects with cartel figure Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer).
Kevin and Bella (Lara Pulver) reconcile, and Eddie (Anson Boon) survives but is rejected by Kevin. Butterworth said if renewed, the show would continue exploring the family’s chaos and the “Jeeves and Wooster relationship” Harry has with them.
As of this writing, Paramount+ has not officially announced Season 2.
