As Marvel Studios prepares for the high-stakes debut of Avengers: Doomsday, actress Hayley Atwell spoke on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast in October 2026. For Atwell, this involves navigating the legacy of Peggy Carter following the character’s appearance as a Captain Carter variant in the Multiverse of Madness and her traditional 1940s incarnation.
The explored various character trajectories to determine which paths fit the sprawling multiverse narrative.
The foundation for Atwell’s return was laid recently in the September 2026 theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame: Encore. This version introduced a significant new post-credits scene that bridges the gap to Doomsday. In the sequence, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is seen interrupting the long-awaited 1940s dance between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, a moment that suggests the “happily ever after” established in the original Endgame may be under threat by multiversal shifts.
Atwell is not the only legacy actor returning with a modified presence. Chris Evans is confirmed to return as Steve Rogers, though his appearance will deviate from his classic clean-cut look. Reports indicate Rogers will sport a “Jesus-like” aesthetic in the film, featuring significantly longer hair and a beard. This shift in appearance aligns with the heavier, more complex tone the Russo Brothers are reportedly aiming for as the Avengers face off against Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the franchise in the role of the primary antagonist, Doctor Doom.
The secretive nature of the production has also affected how the cast interacts on set. Alan Cumming, who is reprising his role as Nightcrawler, reportedly filmed his scenes in isolation from the rest of the primary cast. This compartmentalized filming strategy, similar to techniques used during the production of Infinity War and Endgame, serves both to manage the logistical complexity of the massive ensemble and to maintain strict security over the film’s plot points.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026. The film marks a pivotal chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, attempting to reconcile the finality of the Infinity Saga with the expanding possibilities of the multiverse.
