The upcoming M3GAN 2.0 is set to see its titular character go up against a brand new nemesis, and according to producer James Wan, the team behind the sequel took inspiration from a James Cameron classic.
What did James Wan say about M3GAN 2.0?
In a recent interview with Empire, Wan spoke about the main dynamic of M3GAN 2.0, which will see M3GAN (played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) going up against the formidable military robot Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno). According to Wan, the idea to have the two robots have a showdown took some inspiration from 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
“We saw the path James Cameron took with Terminator 2,” said Wan. “If part of the jokey inspiration for the first M3GAN was that it was supposed to be our version of The Terminator, but with a killer doll instead of Arnold Schwarzenegger, then it felt right that the sequel would be Terminator 2: Judgment Day. We knew that M3GAN had to meet a nemesis potentially more powerful than she is.”
M3GAN 2.0 will be released in United States theaters on June 27, 2025, from Universal Pictures. A spin-off movie titled SOULM8TE is also in the works and is dated for January 2, 2026.
The movie is directed by Gerard Johnston, who also helmed the first movie. The cast further includes Jen Van Epps, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement. James Wan, Jason Blum, and Williams serve as producers, while Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur serve as executive producers.
The cast of the movie includes Allison Williams as Gemma, Violet McGraw as Cady, Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole, Amie Donald as M3GAN, Jenna Davis as the voice of M3GAN, and Ivanna Sakhno as Amelia.
M3GAN was released in United States theaters in January 2022. The Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions movie quickly became a hit, making $181 million at the global box office off an estimated $12 million budget.
