On October 22, 2021, an incident on the New Mexico set of the indie Western Rustleft cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dead and director Joel Souza wounded, both shot by a gun held by the film’s lead actor, co-writer, and producer, Alec Baldwin. It was a horrifying incident that immediately got the industry talking about the use of guns and safety on set, even though it was potentially a freak accident involving live bullets that never should have been loaded into the gun Baldwin was using to rehearse. Three and a half years later, Rust just hit theaters and VOD on Friday, May 2, with the film's original producers not gaining from the movie, but Halyna's husband, Matthew Hutchins, and their son receiving any profits the movie might make.
