Klara and the Sun’s first footage revealed ahead of tomorrow’s trailer

A short, dialogue-light preview of Klara and the Sun ahead of tomorrow’s official trailer launch has been released. The footage shows the first encounter between two central characters: Klara, an Artificial Friend played by Jenna Ortega, and the sick teenager she has been bought to tutor, Josie (Mia Tharia). Amy Adams also appears as Chrissie, the mother who makes the purchase out of desperation.

It appears Taika Waititi did not anticipate a struggle. He grabbed Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel during a layover and immediately believed the story would transfer cleanly to film. That assumption collapsed once writing began. “I thought that this would be maybe the easiest film I’d ever make,” he told Vanity Fair. “The more you read the book and the more you’re trying to delve into the relationships, the more you unlock and the more complicated it gets.”

Ishiguro’s narrator is Klara herself, an android who observes humanity from a shop window before worshiping the Sun as a living being. Once purchased for 14-year-old Josie, she discovers a household shattered by genetic “lifting,” a process that boosted Josie’s intellect but left her body failing. Her older sister, Sal, had already died from the same procedure.

The production trades futuristic chrome for a palette rooted in the 1960s, a deliberate choice that makes the dystopia feel lived-in rather than sterile. Waititi also stripped the internet from everyday life, a background detail he treats as a quiet punchline about human error. “I wanted to do something to subtly suggest that we somehow f—ed everything up and they took the internet away from us,” he said.

Dahvi Waller drafted the initial screenplay. It opens in cinemas on October 23.
