James Gunn has addressed fan speculation about a mysterious figure in the Superman (2025) trailer. Some viewers believed the scene hinted at Bizarro’s appearance due to the character’s altered look. However, Gunn clarified the identity and explained why the theory doesn’t hold. His comments put to rest one of the trailer’s most talked-about moments.
James Gunn confirms Bizarro doesn’t appear in Superman trailer
Speculation surrounding a figure in the Superman trailer led some fans to question whether the character shown was Bizarro. In a Threads post, pointed to the character’s “disheveled hair,” “oddly pigmented skin,” and “yellow cape with a red logo” as clues suggesting it might be Bizarro instead of Superman. The user asked if the shot could be a distorted image of the iconic Superman villain.
James Gunn directly responded, stating, “Haha it’s Superman. It’s real photography of David,” confirming that the character is David Corenswet as Superman and not Bizarro.
In another thread, a user asked whether Superman was falling or flying in the shot. Gunn replied, “He’s propelling himself downward in the cannonball position, gaining speed from above.” This clarified the scene as an intentional combat move by Superman, not a visual cue for an alternate version or clone.
Elsewhere, the trailer included a brief background news report referencing “major floods cause suffering.” This led fans to connect the event to the Gotham City flood from The Batman (2022), where the Riddler triggered catastrophic flooding. The reference reignited speculation that Robert Pattinson’s Batman might exist in the DCU.
James Gunn has already addressed the status of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe in a conversation with Collider. He confirmed, “It’s certainly not the plan” to include Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran also stated that “it’s imperative” for the DCU to introduce a new Batman. Andy Muschietti is directing The Brave and the Bold, which will feature the DCU’s official Batman.
Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027, as part of a separate “epic crime saga.” With confirmation that both Reeves’ and Gunn’s projects exist in separate universes, the reference to flooding in the Superman trailer does not seem to indicate a shared continuity.
