Moana 2 writer Dana Ledoux Miller has explained how the sequel's production helped influence and enhance work on the live-action remake. The upcoming Moana live-action remake is currently filming, with Dwayne Johnson making his return as Maui in the process. Production of the new movie was happening at the same time as the animated sequel, which was originally conceived as a Disney+ TV show before it was reworked into a theatrical feature. Both projects were written by Miller alongside Jared Bush, the latter of whom also wrote the 2016 animated original.
