George R. R. Martin has addressed fans’ frustration about the delay in his finishing the Game Of Thrones novels, arguing that he does care despite accusations made against him.

Fans voiced their frustration at the news, believing this would further keep him from the final two books in A Song Of Ice And Fire, the book series that would be made into the Game Of Thrones TV show. The last book came out in 2011, and fans have waited ever since for the final two instalments The Winds Of Winter and A Dream Of Spring. The show created its own ending to the saga.
Writing on a blog post for his personal website, Martin introduced the project before addressing those complaints.
“I know, I know” he began. “Some of you will just be pissed off by this, as you are by everything I announce here that is not about Westeros or THE WINDS OF WINTER. You have given up on me, or on the book. I will never finish WINDS, If I do, I will never finish A DREAM OF SPRING. If I do, it won’t be any good. I ought to get some other writer to pinch hit for me… I am going to die soon anyway, because I am so old”.
He continued listing fan assumptions, saying: “I lost all interest in A Song of Ice and Fire decades ago. I don’t give a shit about writing any longer, I just sit around and spend my money” he concluded: “You don’t care about anything but WINDS OF WINTER. You’ve told me so often enough”.
Answering these accusations, he wrote: “Thing is, I do care about them. And I care about Westeros and WINDS as well. The Starks and Lannisters and Targaryens, Tyrion and Asha, Dany and Daenerys, the dragons and the direwolves, I care about them all. More than you can ever imagine”.
Currently, there are two TV adaptations based on the Game Of Thrones franchise: the prequel series House Of The Dragon, based on elements of Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood; and the forthcoming show A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, set to air in 2026 and based on the author’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
In April, George R. R. Martin described finishing A Song Of Ice And Fire as “the curse of my life”, explaining: “I have periods where I make progress and then other things divert my attention and suddenly I have a deadline for one of the HBO shows, I have something else to do”.
