George Clooney returns to silver hair at 2025 Tony Awards
George Clooney revealed his natural silver hair on June 8, 2025, at the 78th Annual Tony Awards in New York City.
The 64-year-old actor appeared with wife Amal Clooney at Radio City Musical Hall. He had wrapped his final Broadway performance of Good Night, and Good Luck earlier that afternoon. Clooney was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.
For his Broadway debut, Clooney had dyed his hair dark brown to suit his role. During a June 2 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he explained the transition: “It’s bad. It’s still dark on top, but it’s gray at the bottom.” He added that it had been about two months since he last dyed it. “So you get that really nice-looking grow-out of gray.” Clooney said he planned to stop dyeing it after the final show: “We do a matinee, and then by the time we go to the Tonys that night, it’ll be gone.”
At the Tonys, Clooney wore a classic black tuxedo with his natural hair on display, showing only traces of dark dye at the crown. Amal wore a white beaded column gown with matching clutch and shoulder detailing.
Clooney joked with Meyers about hiding the transition under baseball caps, saying, “It really looks bad. It looks like [I’m] going through some horrible midlife crisis.” He admitted Amal found the look “funny” but would “be glad when it’s gone.”
The actor played journalist Edward R. Murrow in the stage version of Good Night, and Good Luck, which he co-adapted with Grant Heslov. The play opened on April 3 at the Winter Garden Theatre and closed on June 8. Directed by David Cromer, it is based on the 2005 film of the same name, originally directed and co-written by Clooney.
