Fans thrilled as Netflix ‘saves’ beloved children’s TV show after shock axe

Sesame Street fans have a lot to celebrate after it was confirmed that the hit series had found a new home on Netflix for the upcoming season.

The iconic PBS program first premiered in November 1969, and has been an important source of entertainment and education for young people.

At the end of last year, it was announced that Warner Bros Discovery would not be renewing their agreement to finance or produce new episodes on HBO Max, sparking concern for the future of Elmo, Rocco and co.

‘We will continue to invest in our best-in-class programming and look forward to announcing our new distribution plans in the coming months, ensuring that Sesame Street reaches as many children as possible for generations to come,’ a spokesperson said at the time.

Thankfully, Netflix bosses stepped in to save the Muppets, sharing the news that the ‘all-new reimagined 56th season’ will be available to viewers around the world.

According to a press release, the episodes will include the return of beloved segments including Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck – and will be available ‘same-day-and-date in the US’ on PBS stations for free.

Although it is not clear when the upcoming series will be released, there will also be some ‘format changes’ to keep things fresh.

Sesame Street has been a staple of our screens for well over five decades, and is seen as a true trail-blazer in educating children.

In recent years, episodes have focused on teaching youngsters about racism, vaccinations and fighting prejudice.

Fans were thrilled over the update and flocked to social media to celebrate the news, praising Netflix for ‘saving’ the acclaimed show.

Reddit user MalsAU commented: ‘Crucially, this will also help keep Sesame Street going on PBS. New episodes will premier on PBS Kids and Netflix on the same day [sic].’

Sad-Blacksmith-3217 agreed: ‘Finally some good news this morning. All I was getting was doom and gloom until now.’

PinkPositive45 penned: ‘Rare Netflix win!! Love to see it! I do hope they can make it as accessible as PBS but it’s absolutely better than the show fading away.’

ExultantSandwich clarified: ‘It’s actually more available now, same day on PBS where before HBO got episodes ahead of time.’
