When David Benavidez moved up a weight class to light heavyweight out of sheer frustration, Canelo Alvarez wasn’t exactly concerned about losing a potential top-tier opponent. In fact, he was relieved he didn’t have to answer any more questions regarding a fight with the 28-year-old. “The way he talks, he thinks he’s Superman,” Canelo scoffed a few weeks ago. To make matters worse, the future Hall of Famer added that “He’s [Benavidez] very disrespect, not just with me, with everybody.” And despite Benavidez having just claimed the WBC Light Heavyweight title, Canelo Alvarez brushed it off, insisting Benavidez hadn’t done anything worth his time. And instead, Canelo Alvarez opted to fight for the undisputed super middleweight crown against William Scull on May 3rd.
But after going the distance with Scull in a 12-round snoozefest with some of the lowest punches ever recorded, and fans and critics alike calling the bout a dud, even Canelo had to admit that it was a “boring fight,” blaming his opponent for being defensive. That’s when the gloves really came off online. Fans began to stir the pot, saying if Canelo Alvarez didn’t like how the Cuban boxer fought, he should’ve stepped up to face the reigning light heavyweight champion instead.
After a lackluster win, Canelo Alvarez can’t wait for a real challenger
Yesterday, Ring Magazine took to X and shared, “Canelo Alvarez reacts to the William Scull fight and hopes his showdown with Terence Crawford will be far more exciting ” In the post-fight interview with Chris Mannix when asked about his performance, Canelo Alvarez admitted, “That’s why I don’t like fighting those kind of guys. They can just survive and go through 12 rounds. And that’s what I don’t like about them.” It’s clear Canelo Alvarez isn’t a fan of guys who play defense for the sake of going the distance rather than coming in to win. So what does he want instead? “I hope September comes in another kind of fight,” he stated while looking over at Bud Crawford, who was standing in front of him.

As the interview continued, he was further asked, “When you hear one judge say 115-113, what do you think?” The 63-2 boxer responded, “For me it’s a boring fight. You know, like a fighter not trying to win or just try and survive.” And if that wasn’t harsh enough on Scull, he added, “I hate those kind of fighters.”
And when the topic shifted to a fight he’s long been hesitant about—the Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez fight, to be precise—Canelo gave a pretty straightforward answer. It’s not necessarily because he suddenly wants it; it’s because the pressure is coming from all sides. “Everybody’s asking for this fight,” he said, including His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi advisor who’s been instrumental in organizing the blockbuster matchups. “My nino, Turki Alalshikh wants it. That’s why we’re here,” the Guadalajara native shared.
Obviously, this kind of backing makes it hard to say no. And that’s why the stage is finally being set. However, when Canelo Alvarez labeled the fight with William Scull as “boring,” the comment quickly backfired with netizens online trolling the Mexican superstar for his choice of opponents.
Canelo Alvarez’s credibility questioned after Crawford out announcement
One fan didn’t mince words when reacting to the Canelo vs. Crawford announcement, writing, “Turki could have made Canelo vs. Benavidez… instead we’re getting Crawford’s retirement exhibition match.” It was a pointed jab that summed up the growing frustration among boxing fans. With Terence Crawford jumping up two weight divisions to meet Canelo at 37 years old, many felt the more natural matchup would’ve been with David Benavidez. Both fighters are close enough in weight that one could have easily stepped up or down to make it happen. Not to mention, that fight would’ve brought exactly the kind of heat Canelo Alvarez claimed he’s looking for. As a result, another fan remarked, “Crying he didn’t get the kind of fight he was looking for fight David he will give you the kind of fight you looking for I’m pretty sure.”

Another fan captured what a clash with David Benavidez might actually look like. The user tweeted, “Benavidez whoops him worse than Bivol—I see the vision now .” A bold take, but not uncommon in boxing circles where many still remember how Dmitry Bivol gave Canelo Alvarez his second professional career defeat in 2022, after Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated him back in 2013.
Another fan didn’t hold back, urging Canelo Alvarez to stop avoiding the real challenges: “Well fight Benavidez or David Morrell then… Stop capping.” With David Benavidez reportedly in talks to face Callum Smith next, the window for a Canelo-Benavidez clash may not stay open forever. But here’s the thing—Canelo Alvarez still has time. After his four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh, a mega-fight with Benavidez or even Morrell could still be on the table. And maybe that’s the perfect way for Canelo to close the curtain on a legendary career. After all, he’s made it clear that the main reason he agreed to fight Terence Crawford in the first place was because fans kept asking for it. So if he truly wants to give the people what they want, then a showdown with Benavidez shouldn’t be too hard to make happen.
In the end, speaking of the deal, another user wasn’t buying Canelo’s explanation for why he’s fighting Crawford. “Canelo said I’m not chasing this mf, I’ma get paid the same amount regardless,” the user wrote. And it makes sense. After all, Canelo Alvarez reportedly walked away from a $150 million deal with Jake Paul to sign a staggering $400 million contract with the Saudis, covering fights through 2026.
So now the question is, can we ever get Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez?
