When Ray Wise’s Ian Ward returned to Genoa City on Young and Restless, a final showdown taking place with Eric Braeden’s Victor Newman seemed inevitable. That’s exactly what happened when Victor summoned Ian in the middle of the night on Tuesday’s episode after learning from the now-late Jordan that it was Ian who murdered Heather. Victor’s intention in bringing Ian to the ranch was to make Ian sign a confession to his crime, which would clear Sharon of Heather’s murder. By Wednesday’s episode, Ian had wrestled the gun from Victor’s henchman and had a gun trained on Victor, along with Nick and Michael. At the end of that eventful show, both Victor and Ian had bullet wounds and the stage was set for their respective fates to be revealed on Thursday’s episode.

As the episode kicked off, Victor was being tended to by both Victoria and Nikki, who were fussing over the patriarch in an attempt to stem the bleeding. Also a bloody mess was Ian, who asked Nick to end things for him. As enticing as the thought may have been, Nick passed. Despite both men being in bad shape, it didn’t stop the taunts and insults from flying between the two gunshot victims. Then, with a huge last gasp of air, Ian stopped breathing.

First responders arrived and pronounced Ian dead, bringing a sigh of relief from his many victims, especially Nikki. Chance wanted answers from the Newmans. Unfortunately for Chance, that might have to wait because Victor, who lost a lot of blood, was in need of surgery. After Victor told Michael he wouldn’t forget the way he stuck around, The Mustache insisted on getting to the ambulance on his own steam.

Nikki took a final look at Ian as his body was being taken away on a gurney, and proclaimed that his reign of terror was finally over. It appeared to please her that he died knowing his revenge plot was a huge failure.

Sharon, Mariah and a safe-and-sound Tessa (she’d had car trouble and a dead phone battery, hence why she was out of touch) made their way to the ranch, concerned about the sirens they had heard en route. Mariah spotted Ian’s body, and while it was a welcome sight, at the same time she realized it would take a while for her to process the fact that he can no longer hurt her. Sharon also took her turn telling off the baddie, speaking up for Heather, lamenting that such a good person had paid for his deviousness with her life. Mariah returned, having even more to say to the man she once believed was a hero but who had tortured her and given her nightmares. She told him their tie was broken — and that he didn’t beat her, after all.

Ian was soon taken away by EMTs. But once his body was loaded into the ambulance and the vehicle drove off, another twist was in store: Iam gasped for air and his eyes opened!
