Breaking news: Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) jumps into bed with someone on Coronation Street. I know. Not exactly revelatory. Trust me… it gets a LOT better.
Carl Webster is unquestionably one of the most joyously ‘love to hate’ villains to tread the Cobbles in quite some time.
Operating in an entirely different arena than abusers like Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) or vile predators like Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon), Carl is a good old fashioned schemer, liar and heartbreaker. He’s one of the few baddies on the Street this year whose crimes aren’t illegal – some of them anyway.
Most notably, he completely torpedoed his then-brother-now-uncle (it’s complicated), Kevin Webster’s(Michael Le Vell) marriage to his wife, Abi Webster (Sally Carman), by luring her into bed.
Just because one inter-family affair wasn’t quite despicable enough, the Worst Webster also did the dirty with James Bailey (Jason Callender). When Abi found out, she wasn’t happy. But by then, the relationship was public and there was no more need for sneaking around – which was half the fun for Carl. So he cruelly cast Abi aside.
However, the biggest heart Carl’s broken in Corrie is his own mother’s, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney).
Not only did he get drunk on her wedding day and cause the Corriedale crash that Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) died in, but he slid his poor mum into the driving seat and took advantage of her early-onset dementia to gaslight her into taking the blame. He even had Debs go to prison in his place. What a charmer.
Even when she was released, Carl was not deterred in his mission to be Weatherfield’s greatest wrong’un. He did his best to scam Debs out of her beloved Chariot Street Hotel. Time and again, Debbie wanted to believe the best in her son, but eventually the scales fell from her eyes, and she told her deadbeat son to sling his hook with the blessing of an entire soap-watching nation.
Then a car fell on Carl’s head.
In one of Corrie’s greatest schadenfreude moments ever, Carl snuck into the garage to tamper with the brakes on Kev’s car, to get revenge for stealing back the money Debbie gave him for staying out of her life. Unbeknownst to Carl, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) was also in the garage recording his sabotage on the phone, but he accidentally knocked the car jack… and karma hit. Literally.
Since the, Carl’s relationship with Debbie and her husband Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) has mellowed slightly – barring the odd dodgy deal unloading stolen motors or Mexican stand-off in the garage with a gangster’s gun.
This is largely because of Debbie’s rapidly worsening dementia. Although Carl has shown a seemingly genuine desire to build bridges and genuine concern over her frequent memory lapses, Ronnie and Kev are understandably keeping him at arms’ length.
However, Carl wouldn’t be Carl if he wasn’t occasionally naughty now and again. Which is just what happens in upcoming episodes of Coronation Street, with unfortunately heartbreaking results.
When Debbie and Ronnie return home, they are shocked to see asemi-naked Carl emerges from his room followed by a random woman. When she introduces herself as Kylie, Debbie assumes she’s International pop sensation and Neighbours star Kylie Minogue.
This is why Debbie’s story is such a roaring success. How it captures the bittersweet moments of dementia symptoms, that might be utterly hilarious from another perspective if you weren’t living through it.
The question is, how will Carl handle it?
