Wasim Jaffer has formally applied for the vacant position on India’s men’s senior national selection committee, confirmed following the departure of Ajit Agarkar. The vacancy represents the West Zone, a slot that became open after Agarkar’s tenure concluded on October 4, 2026, when he chose not to pursue a contract extension.
Jaffer’s candidacy introduces a potential shift in the leadership of the selection panel due to specific Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regulations. Under current internal rules, the selector with the highest number of Test appearances among the five-member committee is automatically designated as the chairperson. Currently, Pragyan Ojha is serving as the interim chairman, a role he took over following Agarkar’s exit.
The selection committee transition follows the conclusion of 's tenure in October 2026.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) conducted virtual interviews on October 15 to evaluate the pool of candidates for the West Zone position. Alongside Jaffer, several other former internationals were reportedly interviewed, including Ramesh Powar, Salil Ankola, Jacob Martin, and Connor Williams. The appointment of any candidate with more Test experience than the existing members—which include Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra, and RP Singh—would result in a change of chairmanship.
Beyond the administrative hierarchy, the interview process focused on the long-term strategic direction of the national team. According to reports from Hindustan Times, candidates were asked to provide their assessments of the aging white-ball roster, specifically regarding Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket and his potential participation in the 2027 World Cup.
The application window for the post closed on October 14. Once the CAC finalizes its recommendation, the new selector will join a committee that is currently managing a transitional period for the national side’s leadership across different formats.
