Movie ratings are strange, and every country has a different rating system and different things that the people behind that system take into account when it comes to deciding a movie’s rating. There are so many things that can be said about so many different ratings, relating to censorship, moral standards, and cultural differences regarding adult content, but for now, the American system is going to be focused on. It was once the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), but it’s now the Motion Picture Association (MPA). The association’s system involves five main ratings, currently, with PG-13 being the one that a large number of blockbusters aim for. There’s a lot that can be said about the PG-13 rating, and the way it really restricts movies that have some bad language but no other questionable content (sorry, The King’s Speech. You apparently deserve the same rating as The Wolf of Wall Street), but that’s not what we’re here for today.
