Like dead bodies, classic detective novels didn't just pop out of nowhere. With its earliest origins in Edgar Allan Poe's tales of ratiocination (logical reasoning) in the mid-1800s, the genre steadily gained popularity throughout the 19th century before exploding into the mainstream. From there, classic detective fiction flourished into the Golden Age of detective writing in the 1920s.
