Zoe Saldaña addresses the cliffhanger ending in Lioness Season 3. Talking about the recently concluded third season of Taylor Sheridan‘s thriller series, the actress broke down the Lioness finale twist that aired on Sunday.

For those unversed, the season finale episode of Lioness, “The Unraveling,” ended on a cliffhanger. It showed CIA officer Joe McNamara’s (played by Saldaña) husband leaving with their kids and revealed that Season 1 target Aaliyah Amrohi (played by Stephanie Nur) was behind Joe’s kidnapping.

The tragedy that shaped Aaliyah’s role in the finale

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zoe Saldaña explained why Aaliyah’s role in her character Joe’s abduction feels poetic and connects directly to the show’s original tragedy. She said, “In the first season, we saw the casualties of war: a woman left fatherless. What we don’t really talk about is when this child becomes an adult and the one thing that you’re trying to eliminate in the world.”

In Season 1, CIA operative Cruz Manuelos infiltrated Aaliyah’s inner circle, and the two women unexpectedly fell in love. However, the mission culminated in Cruz killing Aaliyah’s father, an alleged arms dealer. Aaliyah then disappeared from the show until her shocking return in the final moments of the Season 3 finale.

The personal tragedy of losing her father and the ultimate betrayal by Cruz inevitably transformed Aaliyah from an innocent pawn into a hardened mastermind who orchestrated the brutal kidnapping and torture of Joe as personal bait to draw out Cruz and the Lioness team for revenge.

As the 48-year-old continued explaining, “She’s a lost soul; they took so much from her, for the ‘greater good.’ You can’t think that it’s never going to eventually come back to you. What if that ghost does come back to haunt you? And, right now, this woman is a ghost of herself.”

Saldaña concluded her perspective on the finale and the tragedy that shaped Aaliyah’s role in it, saying, “So I think it is poetic, but it’s also very accurate. We’re experiencing that in today’s world, where we’re leaving a lot of children as orphans and homeless, and you can’t expect that that child is going to grow up to be grateful and have love in their hearts and enough strength to forgive and forget. That would be f—ing selfish.”
