DCEU and DCU box office milestones are being closely compared as their first films face off against the MCU’s launch entry. Superman (DCU) surged to the top of recent charts with strong domestic numbers and passed Iron Man in worldwide grosses. Meanwhile, the DCEU’s Man of Steel remains the top-earning debut of the three franchises.
DCEU’s first movie won against DCU and MCU’s first movies at box office
The DCU’s first film Superman (2025) earned $611.4 million worldwide. It surpassed the opening entries of both the MCU and the DCEU at the global box office.
Domestically, Superman grossed $351.7 million. Internationally, it added $259.7 million, with its biggest overseas market being the United Kingdom at $37.1 million. In comparison, the MCU’s Iron Man (2008) finished its run with $585.8 million worldwide, including $319 million domestic and $266.7 million international (via Box Office Mojo).
The DCEU’s Man of Steel (2013) remains ahead of Superman with a lifetime worldwide gross of $670.1 million. Man of Steel earned $291 million in the U.S. and $379.1 million from overseas, including $63.4 million from China, its top foreign territory (via Box Office Mojo). While Superman has overtaken Iron Man during its run, it has yet to close the gap with Man of Steel, which remains the stronger box office performer.
Box Office Mojo‘s data shows Superman opened domestically to $125 million, higher than both Iron Man’s $98.6 million and Man of Steel’s $116.6 million. Internationally, Superman opened with $16 million in Brazil, $7.8 million in Mexico, and $5.3 million in Australia, contributing to its worldwide lead over Iron Man. However, Man of Steel’s stronger legs across markets like China, the U.K., and France maintain its overall advantage.
By percentage split, Superman derived 57.5% of its revenue from domestic audiences and 42.5% from international markets. Iron Man’s ratio was 54.5% domestic and 45.5% international, while Man of Steel leaned international at 56.6% compared to 43.4% domestic. Warner Bros. distributed both Superman and Man of Steel, while Paramount handled Iron Man.
The data confirms that Superman outgrossed the MCU’s launch film Iron Man. However, it still trails the DCEU’s opening entry Man of Steel in final worldwide totals.
