Zack Snyder Reveals New Details, Explains Approach to His Escape From New York Movie Remake

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has shared new details about his upcoming remake of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York. Snyder explained why he plans to keep the movie’s original retro-futuristic setting rather than updating it to the present day. 

The filmmaker revealed that his version will still take place in 1997, but from the perspective of 1981, when Carpenter’s original movie was released.

Speaking about the project, Snyder explained that the story will begin from the same historical point as the original film. 

“The approach is for me — the movie is going to be set in 97. It’s from the perspective of 1981,” Snyder said during his conversation with Josh Horowitz. “I set the movie — the war between the United States police force and the criminal elements takes place on July 9, 1981 which is the release date of the original movie. The rest is pretty much Escape From New York.”

Snyder also wants to preserve the unusual mix of satire, camp, and social commentary that made Carpenter’s movie stand out. 

He described the original as a combination of “kitsch and camp” and praised its commentary on government power and overreach through genre storytelling.

What is the original Escape From New York movie about?

Carpenter’s 1981 movie is set in a dystopian future where Manhattan has been transformed into a massive maximum-security prison. Walls and heavy guards surround the island, while criminals are left to survive without conventional law enforcement.

The story begins after terrorists hijack Air Force One and crash the presidential aircraft into Manhattan. The President is captured by the Duke of New York, the leader of the island’s criminal population.

Authorities then turn to Snake Plissken, a former war hero and convicted criminal played by Kurt Russell. Snake is sent into Manhattan to rescue the President and recover an important government tape. Explosives are implanted in his body to force him to complete the mission within a strict deadline.

Warner Bros. is developing Snyder’s remake and follows his recent work on Rebel Moon. By keeping the 1997 setting while viewing it through the imagination of 1981, the filmmaker intends to preserve the original movie’s distinctive vision rather than turn it into a straightforward modern update.
