The New York Yankees have put third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera on the 10-day injured list after sustaining a left ankle fracture, the team announced Tuesday.

Cabrera was taken off the field in an ambulance Monday night after sliding awkwardly during the ninth inning of the Yankees’ 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Manager Aaron Boone said Cabrera had a brace put on his left ankle before entering the ambulance on a stretcher. Cabrera was taken to a hospital with team athletic trainer Tim Lentych.

“I think everyone understands it was a pretty serious situation,” Boone told reporters after the game. “So, just praying for our guy (Cabrera) tonight and hoping for the best. Trust that he’s in good hands as he goes through the night here.”

The 26-year-old Cabrera writhed on the ground and stayed down for several minutes while being attended to by various medical personnel.

Cabrera is in his fourth MLB season and has become a regular in the Yankees’ lineup. He is hitting .243 this season with one home run and 12 RBIs.

The Yankees also announced infielder DJ LeMahieu has returned from his rehab assignment and has been reinstated from the 10-day IL.

LeMahieu has yet to play this season due to a left calf strain and a right hip issue.

The 36-year-old batted .204 with two home runs and 26 RBIs last season.

New York is first in the American League East with a 24-17 record.
