The New York Yankees lost third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera to a gruesome injury in the ninth inning of Monday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.
Cabrera had to be taken off the field in an ambulance after sliding into home on an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly. With the throw going up the third-base line, Cabrera navigated to avoid the catcher and slid past home plate, but his leg caught under his body, forcing his ankle into an unnatural position.
The 26-year-old was in immediate pain, bringing training personnel from both teams onto the field.
New York manager Aaron Boone confirmed after the game that Cabrera was taken to the hospital, but didn’t have any further update.
As Cabrera was lifted into the ambulance, a number of his Yankees teammates came to be by his side.
Cabrera was 1-for-4 with a walk in the game. His run marked New York’s 11th of the contest.
