X-Men’s Halle Berry Shares Honest Reaction to Maya Boyd’s MCU Storm Casting

Halle Berry has shared her reaction to Maya Boyd taking over the role of Storm in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot. Berry played Ororo Munroe in four X-Men movies and said she is excited to see what Boyd brings to the character.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Create & Cultivate Festival in Los Angeles, Halle Berry praised the young actress and said she expects her to do well in the role.

“I believe she’s going to kill it. You know what I mean?” Berry said. “Yeah, there’s people playing Storm. No, my Storm was my Storm, and I wish her so well. I very much look forward to seeing what her version will be. I’m sure she’s going to murder it.”

The 60-year-old first played Storm in 2000’s X-Men. She returned for X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Berry’s version of the mutant became one of the most recognizable parts of the original film series.

Maya Boyd is now set to play the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Boyd has worked in musical theater, appearing in productions including & Juliet and Merrily We Roll Along. 

Marvel officially introduced the 23-year-old as its new Storm during Disney’s D23 showcase.

Why Berry believes every version of Storm should stand on its own

Halle Berry does not see Maya Boyd’s casting as simply replacing her version of the character. Instead, she believes actors should be able to bring their own interpretation to well-known comic book characters.

Berry compared the situation to her experience playing Catwoman in the 2004 movie of the same name. She pointed out that different actors can approach the same character in different ways.

“And what I love is the same thing happened with Catwoman,” she said. “Everybody has their version of who that character is and how they internalize it.”

The new X-Men movie is being directed by Jake Schreier. The cast also includes Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost.

Maya Boyd’s Storm will be part of Marvel’s first major cinematic take on the X-Men within the MCU. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
