The Lord of the Rings trilogy has a lack of women, featuring only Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Éowyn (Miranda Otto), and Arwen (Liv Tyler) in meaningful roles. However, all three of these women are powerful and fascinating characters. J. R. R. Tolkien never included many female characters, but the ones he did write were high quality, for the most part. Yet, one of the most notable women in Middle-earth has not made it to screens, at least not directly. Tolkien wrote extensively about Middle-earth's past, but one story that stands out is the tale of Beren and Lúthien, in part because of its heroine. While this story has not been adapted, in Peter Jackson's films, Arwen takes on several of her characteristics as her role expands, giving fans a glimpse of what Lúthien could be.
