Justin Thomas is a happy man. The two-time major winner, paired with Rory McIlroy, opened with a 4-under 66 at the Truist Championship. He is tied at T25 at the no-cut sixth signature event of the calendar year. Thomas carded six birdies and two bogeys on Thursday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

And you can say he is hungry for more.

Literally.

The first spot JT hit – after the scoring arena, of course– was Angelo’s. Now, if you are from Philadelphia or have been there, you know the charm of Angelo’s Pizzeria. It’s not (just) the pizzas, but the sandwiches this place is famous for. Now if you are wondering why anyone would gush over a greasy cheesesteak, ask JT.

On second thought, actually don’t; Thomas won’t be able to speak. His mouth is full, belly fuller. Fellow pro, Keith Mitchell, who made the 35-minute drive to Angelo’s from the Philadelphia Cricket Club shared the pictures on his Instagram story.

Interestingly, the 16-time PGA Tour winner also shared the image on his Instagram story, captioning, “I had full intentions of eating half. I didn’t. I inhaled all of it.” PGA Tour’s social media team–a shoutout to them–posted them on their X handle.

And fans were quick to take notice. Thomas, like his playing mate, McIlroy, is in a free spirit after ending his winless streak at the RBC Heritage. He will be off to the PGA Championship next week, hoping to add one more major to his tally. That’s what got fans divided–is that a good diet before a major?

Justin Thomas leaves fans divided

Keith Mitchell sure knows how to take a picture. He caught Thomas in the most awkward position imaginable. Thomas was trying to laugh or perhaps say something, but he was stuffed. Noting that one user joked, “Knees together, belly out, face full of food – absolutely evil work by Keith [crying emojis] condolences to JT.” While another commented, “Packing on a few pounds eh Justin.” A third joked, “Good thing Greyson [Thomas’s apparel sponsor] carries larger sizes now.

On that note, it’s good to remember Justin Thomas follows a strict diet. It’s actually ironic that only two years back, during this tournament week, the 32-year-old spoke of going gluten-free, and dairy-free. Thomas wasn’t able to play well in the heavy summer, and he felt it had something to do with his diet.

Hence a new diet.

At that time, the 16-time PGA Tour winner said, “I want a pizza like you cannot imagine. Like, I would do some really messed up things for a pizza just doused in ranch.” It’s not clear if Thomas still follows the same diet on regular days, but he can surely have more than a slice of pizza.

One user commented that a party is called for when you shoot low: “Boys will feast after going low.” Whereas another one wrote, “Philly knows how to party, that’s for sure.”

The next major is just a week away, and Justin Thomas will travel to Quail Hollow as a potential contender for the Wanamaker Trophy. The 32-year-old already has five top tens this season , and other than a missed cut in 2016, Thomas has never finished outside 26 at Quail Hollow, this year’s PGA Championship venue. JT will tee off at 11.20 AM from the 10th tee on Friday.
