Viewers were caught off guard when The Equalizer was canceled after five seasons, and hopes for Season 6 were dashed. Since then, they have been wondering about the factors that sparked the cancellation. The fifth season recently concluded on May 4, 2025, after an 18-episode run. The series, which is a reboot of the original 1985 series of the same name, follows Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah). McCall is an ex-CIA operative-turned-vigilante who uses her extensive skills to aid people in all sorts of trouble.
So, why was The Equalizer Season 6 canceled by CBS? Here’s what we know.
Here’s why CBS canceled The Equalizer Season 6
The Equalizer Season 6’s cancellation was attributed to a packed schedule by a CBS executive.
CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach explained why they pulled the plug on The Equalizer, FBI: International, and FBI: Most Wanted and did not bring them back for the 2025-26 TV season, which includes 18 returning and eight new series. She said, “It’s not easy to end shows and we had a lot of options this year.” (via Deadline)
Reisenbach further shared how CBS had a “really full” schedule and that they had to look at multiple factors for all their shows, before making “tough” decisions. These factors included “aggregate information, the creative of where they are in their life cycle,” finances, and ratings.
It was earlier reported that declining ratings became one of the reasons for The Equalizer’s cancellation. As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, the ratings had averaged nearly six million viewers after the series’ broadcast time was shifted. This was a considerable drop from the average viewership boasted by the last season, which was 7.89 million.
Despite The Equalizer’s cancellation, fans can rest assured knowing that Queen Latifah is working on a new project. The actress teased the existence of this project in an Instagram post, saying she “can’t wait to share” details about it.
