The Last of Us Season 2 has featured several new characters and elements from the game the HBO series is adapted from. Now, fans of the show are wondering if it’s the turn of the monstrous Rat King to show up.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Rat King’s introduction in the ongoing season.

Did The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 set up the Rat King?

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 seems to have set the stage for the infamous Rat King’s entry in the picture.

Gamers are already familiar with the terrifying entity that lurks within the basement of the Lakehill Seattle Hospital. When the opening scene of Episode 5, “Feel Her Love,” alludes to the same hospital, fans were quick to note the impending horror. The episode sees Hanrahan speaking with a lower-level WLF member called Elise, who informs, “We cleared the ground floor up to the sixth, a few scattered infected here and there, nothing we couldn’t handle.”

She further states, “All that was left was the basement; B1, B2, and B3. We were expecting the worst… plus the old-timer said down there was where they brought the first Cordyceps patients in ’03.” A squad went down to B1 for a sweep but couldn’t find anything. However, later we see spores, hinting at the presence of something sinister down there. In a sneaky foreshadowing moment, Elise says, “The whole floor was empty… not even rats.” Thus, fans are certain that the show is gearing up to introduce the terrifying Rat King in the upcoming episodes.

Notably, the Rat King appears in The Last of Us Part II video game. It is a combination of multiple stalkers, clickers, and a bloater. As a result, it became one of the most difficult organisms to kill in the game. Popular lore suggests that the Rat King consists of some of the first infected victims of the Cordyceps outbreak. Rat King gets its name from the eponymous real-life phenomenon where a group of rats gets their tails intertwined and knotted by dirt, hair, or other sticky matter.
