The Michael biopic is drawing attention not just for who it includes, but also for who it leaves out. The absence of Janet Jackson has sparked curiosity among fans, and now a close family member, La Toya Jackson, has stepped in to clarify why that decision was made.

La Toya Jackson explains why Michael movie doesn’t depict sister Janet

La Toya Jackson has revealed that Janet Jackson was approached to be part of the Michael biopic but chose not to participate. Speaking to Variety at the film’s premiere, she said, “I wish everybody was in the movie,” before adding that Janet “kindly declined,” and the family respected her decision.

The film focuses on the life of Michael Jackson, with his nephew Jaafar Jackson playing the lead role. Other family members are portrayed as well, including Joe and Katherine Jackson, showing that the movie does explore the broader family dynamic even without Janet’s presence. La Toya herself is also depicted, played by actress Jessica Sula.

Director Antoine Fuqua emphasized that family involvement was a priority while making the film. He explained that telling a real person’s story comes with responsibility, especially when it involves loved ones. “You’re telling somebody’s life, you want to make sure that they’re happy,” Fuqua explained.

Fuqua also shared that he respects Janet’s choice and noted that she continues to support Jaafar’s performance, which he called an important aspect of the project. “I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s OK. She’s supportive of Jaafar, and that’s what matters,” Fuqua shared.

La Toya also had strong praise for Jaafar’s portrayal. She said his performance feels so real that viewers might forget they are watching an actor and not Michael himself. That reaction has been echoed by others who have seen early footage or attended screenings of the film.

The film also involved close oversight from Michael’s estate. His son Prince Jackson worked as an executive producer, ensuring the story aligned with the family’s perspective. However, not all family members are involved, and some, including Paris Jackson, have voiced criticism about how certain parts of Michael’s life are handled.
