Apple TV+’s acclaimed spy drama, Slow Horses, is finally back with Season 5. The first episode was intriguing enough to raise some big questions in the minds of the fans. Out of everything that happened in the season 5 premiere, one point that seemed to stick out was River Cartwright‘s behavior.
Here’s why Cartwright seemed to be acting strangely in Slow Horses Season 5 Episode 1.

What happened to River Cartwright in Slow Horses Season 5?
River Cartwright’s behavior in Slow Horses season 5 left many curious. He seemed to be visibly distracted and weary. He also seemed to be making a lot of mistakes in a way that would imply that his mind was not really in the right place.
As the episode progresses, viewers find out that it is due to personal issues that have been weighing him down. It is revealed that David Cartwright, River’s retired agent and aging grandfather, has gone into a home and is rapidly deteriorating mentally. To add to this, David is the only remaining member of River’s family, making it an even more difficult prospect for him.
To add to this, River also recently found out about his estranged father, Frank Harkness. It turned out that Frank is an evil ex-CIA agent who tried to recruit him as a mercenary. There is more that piles up on River when it comes to his personal life. His relationship with Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar) has been seeing its share of troubles. Despite River’s attempts, it seems to be in a tough spot. Louisa asked for a break from River and the service, further making things hard.
So, with so much weighing him down, it is normal to see River easily distracted and weary. This will only change when things in his personal life improve at least a bit, but at this point, it seems to be a long shot.
