Wondering why Jake Lockett’s Sam Carver is leaving Chicago Fire as a series regular in Season 14? After a season of emotional breakthroughs, personal struggles, and deepening connections, Carver’s storyline takes an unexpected turn in the Season 13 finale. His journey with sobriety and growing bond with Violet Mikami raise questions about what drives him to step away from Firehouse 51.

Here’s what we know about Carver’s departure, his future, and its impact on Violet and the team.

Why Jake Locket’s Carver is leaving as a series regular in Chicago Fire Season 14

Jake Lockett’s character Sam Carver is stepping away from Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire Season 14.

His decision is tied to his ongoing struggle with sobriety. In the Season 13 finale, Carver reveals he applied for a new position at the Denver Fire Department. He hopes the change will help him maintain his recovery. “Gotta try, at least,” Carver tells Violet after confirming his decision to leave.

Carver’s departure comes after a season-long arc involving his stay in rehab and the rekindling of his relationship with Violet Mikami. Showrunner Andrea Newman explained the reasoning behind his storyline, telling NBC Insider, “Carver is really on a journey of his own that he’s been on for a while, and we wanted to portray that in a realistic way. So what he’s going through is a lot.”

While Violet confesses her love for Carver in a heartfelt letter, she initially holds back from sending it to avoid triggering him. When she finally shares her feelings in the finale, Carver responds by kissing her and saying, “I love you, Violet,” before confirming he’s still leaving for Denver. Violet replies, “Yeah, I mean, whatever you need to do to be healthy.”

Andrea Newman added, “We may not have Carver full-time next season, but we may have him for a bunch of it too, and I think there’s a lot left to figure out between [Violet and Carver].” She also noted Violet’s emotional growth: “That she got to a place where she could say [she loves him] was a major evolution for her, too.”

Carver’s exit leaves the door open for future appearances. For now, his focus remains on recovery and starting anew outside Chicago.
