Fans speculate that Jake McLaughlin’s Michael Ormewood is leaving Will Trent after the shocking season 3 finale. At Disney’s May 13 Upfronts, McLaughlin addressed speculation about his character’s fate.

He revealed that he knew about the significant development for Atlanta homicide detective Michael Ormewood this season. The actor remained cryptic about whether this marks his departure from the ABC crime drama.

Is Jake McLaughlin’s Michael Ormewood leaving Will Trent after Season 3?

In the Will Trent season 3 finale, Jake McLaughlin’s Michael Ormewood “collapsed” after viewers got to know that he has a brain tumor. Following the edgy cliffhanger, McLaughlin opened up about his character’s fate in the show as viewers theorized that the actor would be leaving Will Trent, maybe succumbing to the deadly brain tumor.

At Disney’s Upfronts presentation, the 42-year-old actor revealed his limited knowledge about his character’s fate in the upcoming season 4. The Quantico star noted, “I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t. They won’t tell me what’s happening next season” (via TV Insider).

He added, “I think (Michael will) be okay-ish… but like I said, we just ended the season, so I don’t know what my destiny is going to be, what’s in store for me.” The actor teased, “Maybe the road to recovery, maybe not. I don’t know.”

Additionally, Will Trent’s showmakers Liz Heldens and Daniel T. Thomsen also discussed the trajectory of Michael Ormewood in the season 4. Heldens told Screenrant, “We’re still creatively figuring things out. He is a character whose strength and physicality are a big part of his identity.

Heldens hints at a possible chance of McLaughlin’s return. She explained, “It’s interesting to think about him trying to recover, trying to get back to a version of himself that he recognizes. But yeah, we started this notion of a brain tumor in an episode that Dan wrote, and then we wanted to bring it to a real crisis.”

Meanwhile, viewers have mixed opinions about McLaughlin’s Michael Ormewood’s death on the show. A fan explained on Reddit, “I don’t think he’ll die, but the tumor adds some nice tension to his family dynamics and relationships. Being confronted with mortality is a great way to drive character growth, or even some unraveling. That seems to be a bit of a theme this season.”

A second fan echoed the sentiments, adding, “Hopefully, Ormewood’s tumor will be benign and will give him a new perspective. He’s a great character, so the audience would revolt if anything happened to him.”
