Vikram Sugumaran was an extremely popular Tamil film director. Vikram - who had worked with several top actors such as Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Prabhu, Kathir, and Viji Chabdrashaekhar - passed away due to a heart attack on June 2, 2025. The director was reportedly travelling by bus from Madurai to Chennai when he succumbed to sudden cardiac arrest. The news of his untimely death has left many shocked.
The news of Vikram Sugumaran's untimely demise was shared by his friend and actor, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj. He took to his X handle to share the tragic news. He referred to the director as his brother and explained how he had learned a lot from him. ""#Rip dearest brother @VikramSugumara3 I've learnt so much from you & will always cherish every moment. Gone too soon. You will be missed #RIPVikramSugumaran," his X post read.
Within minutes, his X handle was flooded with condolence messages. Shocked with the sudden news, fans wanted to know what had happened. Many were still not able to accept the news of his untimely death. A used posted, "RIP sir, condolences to his family and loved ones." Next post read, "Shocking...He deserves so much more recognition for his first film, #madhayaanaikootam."
Vikram Sukumaran made his directorial debut in 2013 with Madha Yaanai Koottam which was lauded for capturing the life and caste conflicts of southern Tamil Nadu. It also received critical acclaim. The film featured Kathir and Anju in key roles. He had also worked as an assistant director with Balu Mahendra. He had also acted in films like Polladhavan and Kodiveeran. In Aadukalam, he was roped in as a dialogue writer.
Even though he gained massive success as a filmmaker with his first film, Madha Yaanai Koottam, Vikram took 10 years to return to the silver screen as a director. The filmmaker impressed many with his flawless directorial skills with Ravana Kottam in 2023. This film featured Shanthanu, Anandhi, Prabhu, Ilavarasu, Deepa, and Aruldas in key roles. The last film he directed was Therum Borum, which focused on mountaineering.
