The accident…” Otto clarifies that he didn’t work for the government but acted on someone else’s request, stating, “She asked for my help.” When Colter demands to know who “she” is, Otto answers, “Your mother.”

The final reveal indicates that Mary Dove Shaw, Colter’s mother, orchestrated Ashton Shaw’s death by asking Otto to kill him. Throughout the episode, Colter investigates clues surrounding his father’s mysterious past, including a phone number in Ashton’s journal that led him to David Pearson, a deceased scientist with alleged government ties. Pearson’s suicide in 2003 occurred the same year Ashton died.

During Colter’s investigation into Bill’s disappearance and a child trafficking network, he finds one of Ashton’s wooden carvings at Carl Murphy’s trailer.
