Here’s who was behind Ashton’s murder — and why it changes everything.
Who killed Colter’s father Ashton Shaw in Tracker Season 2’s ending?
In Tracker Season 2, Episode 20 (“Echo Ridge”), Colter Shaw learns that Carl Murphy’s uncle, Otto Waldron, killed his father, Ashton Shaw.
Otto admits to pushing Ashton off a cliff. When Colter asks Otto if he was in the woods the night Ashton died, Otto replies, “I was.” When asked if he threw Ashton off the cliff, Otto confirms, “I did.” He then adds, “But that’s not why you’re here, is it? The accident…” Otto clarifies that he didn’t work for the government but acted on someone else’s request, stating, “She asked for my help.” When Colter demands to know who “she” is, Otto answers, “Your mother.”
The final reveal indicates that Mary Dove Shaw, Colter’s mother, orchestrated Ashton Shaw’s death by asking Otto to kill him. Throughout the episode, Colter investigates clues surrounding his father’s mysterious past, including a phone number in Ashton’s journal that led him to David Pearson, a deceased scientist with alleged government ties. Pearson’s suicide in 2003 occurred the same year Ashton died.
During Colter’s investigation into Bill’s disappearance and a child trafficking network, he finds one of Ashton’s wooden carvings at Carl Murphy’s trailer. Colter later forces Murphy to reveal the carving’s origin, leading him to Murphy’s uncle. At Otto Waldron’s home, the full truth about Ashton’s death is disclosed.
Earlier in the episode, Colter’s brother Russell had confirmed he did not push their father off the cliff and had seen another man in the woods. This aligns with Otto’s confession. Colter’s discovery came despite Mary Dove Shaw urging him to stop digging, telling him, “Whatever happened to Bill has nothing to do with our family.” Otto’s statement confirms her involvement.
Thus, although Otto physically killed Ashton Shaw, he did so at Mary Dove Shaw’s request.
