The investigation into the sudden death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has taken a new turn. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), set up by the Assam government, has arrested musician Shekhar Jyoti, who was reportedly with Zubeen during his final yacht trip to Singapore. Shekhar, a drummer and long-time bandmate of Zubeen, was taken into custody for questioning. However, authorities have not yet clarified the specific reasons for his detention or whether charges will be filed. His arrest came the same day the SIT raided the home of Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma, in Guwahati. Shekhar describes himself on Instagram as a "Sound Engineer, Music Producer, Arranger, Musician, Computer Hardware Engineer." He was with Zubeen during his last trip to Singapore, though it remains unclear why he is being questioned.
The investigation is also widening, with entrepreneur and cultural activist Shyamkanu Mahanta coming under the scanner. There are rumors that members of the Singapore Assam Association could be detained in the coming days as the probe continues.
Zubeen Garg, who was often called Assam's rockstar, tragically passed away while swimming at Lazarus Island in Singapore on September 19. While early reports suggested a scuba diving accident, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, later clarified that he suffered a seizure during his second swim, despite wearing a life jacket earlier in the day.
Zubeen was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead at 2:30 pm. His body was brought back to Assam and given full state honors, including a 21-gun salute, during his cremation. A second autopsy was done to rule out foul play, following growing concerns and public speculation about the circumstances of his death.
