Siliconera Speaks Up: Our Picks for the Next HD-2D JRPG Remake

Chrono Trigger is, without a doubt, the correct answer here in my opinion. However, if I had to pick a game closer to my heart, I think it is high time for a Xenogears return. While the HD-2D style would be quite different for this PS1 JRPG, it could still benefit well if the right amount of time and effort is given to it. I put quite a few hours into the PS1 classic version on the PSP back in the day but never finished it. It is high time this beloved Squaresoft JRPG is available on a modern platform and with the best visual style possible for a JRPG today. -- Cody

It really does have to be Chrono Trigger, doesn’t it? Still, for the sake of variety I’ll choose something else. I think it’s kind of wild that we’ve had so many of these without a Final Fantasy game slipping in. I’ll go with the somewhat less obvious pick and champion Final Fantasy V here. An HD-2D release means replaying the game, and if I’m going to replay any Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy V is my go-to. I can’t get enough of playing around with its job system! -- Shaun

I have to throw in Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen myself. It is the origin point of a lot of strategy RPGs. Plus, it has never really gotten much love outside of its original 1996 release. Tons of jobs, strategy gameplay to rival its successors; it has the works. - John

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is available right now for Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
