In early June, Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey underwent surgery on his left ankle to correct ongoing laxity issues that had bothered him since college. Now, the team has provided an encouraging update on X, announcing that Edey “has been cleared to begin ramping up basketball activities.” The Grizzlies added that the 7-foot-4 big man is expected to return to game action within “6–9 weeks,” though he will likely miss the first couple months of the season as he works his way back.

It’s not the first time Edey has dealt with ankle trouble. Last year, a sprain to the same ankle sidelined him for 12 games before he bounced back and put together a strong rookie campaign. The former two-time national player of the year at Purdue appeared in 66 games with 55 starts, averaging 9.2 points and a rookie-best 8.3 rebounds, earning him a spot on the All-Rookie first team.
