Lulu Roman, known for her role on the country variety show Hee Haw and her gospel music career, has died at the age of 78.

Her son, Damon Roman, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she died on Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington, where she had moved seven months earlier to be with him. No cause of death has been determined.

Roman was born Bertha Louise Hable on May 6, 1946, in Dallas, Texas. She appeared in the first episode of Hee Haw in 1969 and the final syndicated episode in 1993. She began her career as a nightclub performer in Dallas, billed as “Lulu Roman, the World’s Biggest Go-Go Dancer.” Buck Owens discovered her during this time. “He liked my sense of humor,” Roman recalled in 2020. “He told me once that he’d just sit and observe me… ‘You’re a master at quick wit.’” (via Florida Weekly)

Roman said producers cast her after Owens described her to them. “They needed one boy next door, one fat dumb man, one fat dumb woman,” she said. “Buck said, ‘I got your girl! She’s in Dallas!’” She initially appeared in background segments and later became known for her roles in sketches like “The Culhanes,” “Truck Stop,” and “The Jug Band.”

In 1971, Roman was arrested for drug possession. After a four-year sentence, she converted to Christianity in 1973 and returned to Hee Haw with a focus on gospel music. “After I gave my heart to Jesus, the Lord started working on me,” she said. She served a four-year sentence and converted to Christianity in 1973. She later returned to Hee Haw, focusing on gospel music.

Misty Rowe paid tribute to her and said, “We were the original Hee Haw Honeys… I love you, Lu,” she added. “Lulu was a gift in my life.” Her youngest son, Justin, died in 2017.
