Jim Irsay passes away at 65, claims report
Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay died peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2025, according to a statement from the team. He was 65. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Irsay assumed control of the Colts in 1997 following the death of his father, Bob Irsay. He became the youngest NFL owner at the time. Under his leadership, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI in 2007 and became one of the NFL’s most successful franchises of the 2000s. Irsay was general manager from 1984 to 1996 and led the team through key transitions, including the drafting of quarterback Peyton Manning in 1998.
The NFL and team officials released statements commemorating Irsay’s contributions. “Jim’s dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts… his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed,” the Colts posted. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, “Jim was a friend… his courageous work in support of mental health will be a lasting legacy” (via NBC Sports).
Irsay battled health issues in recent years. In December 2023, first responders found him unresponsive, and reports cited a suspected overdose. The Colts later said he was being treated for a severe respiratory illness. He made few public appearances afterward.
His daughters – Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson are set to take over ownership. They received titles in 2012 and have held active roles since.
Irsay also funded the “Kicking the Stigma” initiative, donating over $31 million toward mental health causes. He amassed a collection of over 500 rare items, including historic sports and music memorabilia. Hours before his death, he posted a message of support for the Indiana Pacers on social media.
