Apple TV’s new science fiction comedy, Murderbot, introduces audiences to fascinating hybrid mechanisms, including the SecUnit Robots and the Combat Bots. Known as Constructs, these bots are a blend of human-cloned tissue with advanced robotic hardware.
The protagonist of the story, Murderbot, defies its original programming. This rogue security program has hacked its government control module to pursue decidedly human pastimes. The titular hero prefers to watch television shows obsessively rather than engaging in other “given” activities.
The central mystery of Murderbot captivates viewers immediately. How exactly did this mechanical being develop consciousness? The exploration of its transformed conscience from obedient machine to self-aware entity drives the show’s narrative forward.
Are Murderbot’s SecUnit Construct robots human cyborgs?
In Apple TV’s Murderbot, the SecUnit Construct bots are essentially human cyborgs, as they are made of both biological and technological elements. More than any form of artificial intelligence, viewers argue that Murderbot’s SecUnits possess highly altered human intelligence to process cues.
When the protagonist Murderbot leans more on its human conscience, it remembers flashbacks from the past just like humans do. Hence, viewers believe that the Murderbot going “rogue” is not about AI gaining consciousness. It is more of a study of what the blend of technology and human consciousness can achieve together.
A fan theorized on Reddit, “I don’t think Murderbot technically counts as an AI. It’s a robot with human brain matter integrated into it to give it the ability to process human social and [emotional] cues. Basically, hard right on the cyborg scale, where everything but its brain is roboticized, but Murderbot’s actual mind is still not AI as we use that term today.”
How are Murderbot’s SecUnit Construct robots created?
Murderbot’s SecUnit Construct bots are an incorporation of bot components and organic tissue. Generally, cloned human tissues replicate their brain mechanisms to allow them to operate faster than humans.
The SecUnits look “human” as they have cloned human tissue, including skin, modified lungs, and a face. The bots, within a time span of about eight hours, can apparently also heal up to 20% of their body mass.
Unlike humans, SecUnits do not have any sexual organs. In the book The Murderbot Diaries, SecUnits can adjust how they experience light, sound, pain, and other stimulations.
