This week in London

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, here are 11 of the best activities, dining, and drinking spots in the capital.

1. Try the ‘tongue-tingling’ Dishoom alternative, Ambassadors Clubhouse

By Kitty Chrisp

Dishoom, who? Ambassadors Clubhouse is the height of pre-theatre and lunchtime dining, with world-class Indian food from the team behind Gymkhana – for a fraction of the cost.

For £36 per person, you can snack on Michelin-star poppadoms with tongue-tingling chutneys, enjoy the most succulent lamb slider ever made for a starter, and feast on melt-in-your-mouth curries with a kick as perfect as Alexander Isak for main.

While you might not know what on sweet earth your pudding actually is, it’s indisputably delicious. Wash it all down with thirst-quenching cocktails in either their dimly lit old-worldie restaurant or their sunny Heddon street patio.

For Father’s Day, they’re serving an unforgettable four-course feast. Priced at £105 per person, the menu includes bold, celebratory dishes like the Original BBQ Butter Chicken Chop, Guinea Fowl Changezi, or Punjabi Methi Prawn Curry – all served with biryani, raita, dal, saag, and a bread basket. Lucky Dad!

£36pp deal available to order from 12-3pm & 5.30-6pm. Father’s Day Menu £105pp. 25 Heddon St, Mayfair, W1B 4BH. Book here.

2. Get a fabulously great value meal at Piazza Italiana

By Josie Copson

Living in London has given me a deep appreciation for high ceilings – a rare luxury in this city – while spending every summer in Italy has cemented my love for its cuisine. So stepping into the former British Linen Bank, now transformed into a lavish Italian restaurant complete with gilded columns, intricate cornices and a beautifully hand-painted ceiling, ticked both boxes.

Despite its opulent setting, the venue remains a bit of a hidden gem on weekends. Its location in a weekday banker’s hotspot means Saturdays are quieter – but that’s changing, thanks to a live vinyl DJ and a tempting £35 offer for a starter and main until 4pm. Come in the evening and the vibe continues, with mellow beats and what might be London’s most elegant bread basket (£2pp), featuring glass vials of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

I started with the Tartare di tonno (£17), where yellowfin tuna meets avocado mousse, a slow-cooked egg yolk, shallots and chives – a creamy, fresh combination that’s a perfect palate-opener. For mains, the Spaghetti al pesto di pistacchi e gamberi rossi (£26) was a standout: red Argentine prawns with pistachio pesto, stracciatella and lemon zest. Our waiter compared it to the savoury version of Dubai’s viral chocolate bar – and she wasn’t wrong. Nutty, rich, slightly sweet, and utterly indulgent.

On Saturdays, diners can get a starter and main course for £35, with a dessert added for £39, and bottomless drinks are £35 for 90 minutes between 12-4pm. When the venue reopens at 6pm, mains start from £19 and cocktails begin at £15.

38 Threadneedle St, EC2R 8AY. Book here.

3. Try Nepal’s beloved steamed dumplings at Eat Momo

By Beatrice Aidin

During a healing heartbreak trek to the Nepalese Himalayas last year, I fell in love with Momo. No, not a (very) lucky chap, but the name of Nepal’s beloved steamed dumplings – and I have been looking for the real deal in London ever since.

Hungry in Borough Yards, I stumbled across a café called Eat Momo and with a hopeful heart, ordered freshly made chicken momo with garam masala and coriander leaves served with pickles and tomato achar, a spicy dip.

And wow – they took me straight back to Momo in the mountains. When I learned that the owners are two Nepalese sisters, who describe Eat Momo as a ‘Nepali canteen’, albeit the chicest canteen I’ve ever seen, it all fell into place. Their father curated the Nepali music playlist and said the ‘canteen’ has been designed with Hindu Vastu Shastra principles, a similar philosophy to feng shui. It also boasts a terrace, perfect for after-work wine and dumplings.

Thrilled with my discovery I returned to try the other varieties, paneer, pork or tofu bursting with joyful vegetables, herbs and spices too (they do fried momo as well). So simply do as the sisters say – Eat Momo. Because Nepalese dumplings make being dumped feel a lot less desperate.

Momo from £8. Arch 229, 1 Bank End, SE1 9FJ. Book here.

11. Be kept on your toes at OSCAR at the Crown

By James Besanvalle

Harnessed, spiked, leathered, and scantily-clad dancers greet you as you walk into a bunker-like basement with TVs blaring scenes from The OC – and that’s all before the show even properly begins.

Once a green-haired Oscar Wilde steps out onto the stage with a gaggle of post-apocalyptic dancers and singers in tow, the camp and gritty fun really begins. Fusing the life and story of Oscar Wilde with a dystopian, fascist, underground world that praises trashy 2000s TV like the Real Housewives franchises, it’s a high-energy 90-minute (with no interval) production that’s unlike anything else.

The immersive element literally keeps the audience on its toes, constantly moving them around to make way for sliding stages and big dance numbers. Still a little foggy on what to expect? As a line in the show explains: ‘It’s about Oscar Wilde… if he was a little more Countess Luann.’

OSCAR at the Crown, Thursday (7:30pm), Friday (8:30pm), Saturday (3pm and 8:30pm), and Sunday (3pm). Until 31 August. Tickets, £25. Book here
